Día Internacional del Traductor /// International Translation Day

Hoy 30 de Septiembre se festeja el Día Internacional del Traductor por ser el día de San Jerónimo, que se lo considera el patrono de los traductores.

Jerónimo de Estridón fue un estudioso de la Biblia y fue el primero que la tradujo del hebreo y el griego al latín, conocida como Vulgata que permitió una disponibilidad de la Palabra de Dios al pueblo. Comenzó su traducción en el 382 y la terminó 23 años después en el 405.

Además de ser el patrono de los traductores, también lo es de los bibliotecarios, arqueólogos y archiveros. Se lo venera tanto en la Iglesia Católica, como en la Iglesia Ortodoxa y anglicana.
La FIT-IFT (Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs / International Federation of Translators – Federación Internacional de Traductores) fue fundada en 1953 en París, representa a organizaciones de traductores en más de 60 países, tiene más de cien mil miembros asociados y es una ONG reconocida por la UNESCO, comenzó a celebrar este día. Recién a partir de 1991 obtuvo el reconocimiento mundial como Día Internacional del Traductor, como una forma de promover el orgullo de ejercer una profesión que se está transformando en esencial en esta era globalizada y conectada.

Este año 2011, en coincidencia con los 20 años del reconocimiento internacional, el Dr. Jiri Stejskall, Fundador y Director Ejecutivo de CETRA, Expresidente de la ATA (American Translator Association – Asociación de Traductores Estadounidenses) y Vicepresidente de la FIT-IFT, redactó el siguiente texto, que me atrevo a traducir:

Imagine a world without translators: How would we communicate with each other? With nearly 7,000 languages spoken around the globe, trade and cultural exchange would be impossible. Leaders of nations could not talk to each other. Scientific discoveries could not be shared. Books could be read only by those who speak the author's language. Cross-border traffic would come to a halt. Breaking news would reach only a select few. The Olympic Games could not be held. Nations in distress would not receive assistance from more fortunate ones.

Imagina un mundo sin traductores: ¿Cómo nos comunicaríamos entre nosotros? Con casi 7.000 idiomas hablados alrededor del globo, el intercambio cultural y económico sería imposible. Los líderes de las naciones no podrían hablarse entre si. Los descubrimientos científicos no podrían compartirse. Los libros solo los podrían leer quienes hablaran el idioma del autor. Se pararía el tráfico entre fronteras. Las noticias de último momento solo alcanzarían a unos pocos elegidos. No se realizarían los Juegos Olímpicos. Las naciones necesitadas no recibirían asistencia de otros más afortunados.

The professional translators, interpreters and terminologists represented by FIT member associations build bridges between cultures and facilitate communication that creates prosperity and cultural enrichment. They are brokers of peace and mutual understanding. They open national literatures to the world. They make international assistance in disaster areas possible. They are the voice of politicians, religious and intellectual leaders, and all other people who influence our daily lives. They are gatekeepers of information. They are cultural ambassadors. Thanks to translators, interpreters and terminologists, peoples around the world can preserve their cultural heritage while being active participants in the "global village". Bridging Cultures is the theme of both this year's XIX FIT World Congress and International Translation Day 2011, and the ultimate objective of all FIT member associations.

La diversidad cultural hace que nuestro mundo sea un lugar mejor, pero tenemos que entendernos para evitar conflictos internacionales y ayudarnos en tiempos de necesidad. Tenemos que entendernos para apreciar nuestras diferencias culturales. Member associations are encouraged to mark ITD through activities that raise awareness among the public of this important function of translators, interpreters and terminologists as well as giving practitioners the opportunity to celebrate their craft. This might be by highlighting the different cultures represented within the association, presentations on the challenges of cultural adaptation when translating, or considering the role of translators, interpreters and terminologists in world events, as just a few examples. However you do it, make 30 September a day of celebration!

Buenos Aires Book Fair 2011. The Bible is crying next to a water heater.

Yesterday I went to de Buenos Aires' Book Fair.
On a personal level I was very glad to find with Dani, a former coworker of exploitation at IBM and on a communication level several things call my attention.

It seems that publishing industry is increasingly solid. Seem to me that this fair had more expositors, new stands that weren't last year and some of the traditional with greater space. Not only publishers stands, but also many booksellers encourage themselves to exhibit their products.
At a glance this seems a cultural incentive, although I wouldn't catalog all the fair as cultural... I don't mean the food places, but some replays that seem more like people's fishing to own profit instead of culture.

Let's see, I count like 3 places of miniature books. Are a classic from a long time, but now it seems that have multiplied and anything is published in miniature. I'm waiting for the premiere of the magazines. When will the mini Newsweek or the mini Cosmopolitan be issued? It would be a good option for the train readers in rush hour.
The classic "find out the meaning of your name" that was in several stands could cost from $1.5 to $2.10 USD. I didn't approach to ask why the price difference... especially for something that thanks to Internet one can find out for free.
There was a novelty, "know your astral reading". In a corner of a stand, there was a lady - I suppose she was astrologer, though I couldn't see any diploma or certificate to back her up - that with her computer did the reading and interpretation of the clients astral chart. At least is something interesting and innovative.

Generally, beyond the publishers and specialized booksellers, the more exposed books in the stands were the Public Interest and Self-help books, although in many cases the second category is included in the first. So, Public Interest can be "Learn Linux," "How to overcome a marital infidelity" or Martin Redrado's "No Reserve"... and here I thought several things.
On the one hand, advertising. It seems that selling is the only important thing, consumerism over literary content of a book that is being selling. So, for example, in the press conference that the Chief of Staff, Anibal Fernandez presented his book "Argentine Stupidity and other herbs," that could be a revised version of the Arturo Jauretche's original, made a sort of political campaign pro-reelection of CFK. Or the economy book of Martin Lousteau that takes advantage of the media promotion about the conjugal infidelity scandal with Juana Viale.
On the other hand, anyone can become author of a book and write of absolutely anything. Specially in the "Self-help" category... it's true that I'm not fan to spend $20 USD for someone to tell me how to feel happy, I prefer to do my own experience and in short discover life, it's cheaper, more fun - though could be painful - and satisfying.
So I find that the radio speaker that I used to listen as teenager at "Top 40" from FM Hit, has now become a spiritual guru and wrote the book "Spiritual Sins"... anyone writes about anything, without going any further here I am writing a review about my visit to the Fair Book. :-)
The only positive thing I see is that makes reading and books more accessible for anyone. It was full of teenagers looking for Justin Bieber biographies, but reading isn't synonym of literature. And I think that any book isn't either culture, more like a complex junk shop.

Other flashy curiosity is the variety of topics and subtopics about what's writing. Example, one huge subject could be labor relations, then there are huge subtopics depending of different points of view: legal, social, economical, religious, etc. So, in almost all the science's branches there are manuals of anything one want to learn and even daily situations. "Manual of Records Management," "How to make cross-stitch" or "Learn the better positions to reach the orgasm".

At the end called my attention the prices' difference between editions and publishers. I come up with an idea that could develop a web page, although I don't think I get rich I do think that could be useful. An editions' and prices' comparator. There are pages that compare prices of general products, for whom is searching the best cost-benefit relation, but actually I don't know if that concept was brought to the publishing world.
So, I think that could be a useful tool to compare price and publishing quality of the same literary work and get informed of the causes of that difference in materials, illustrations, invited collaborators, etc. and help that reading massiveness could also be useful for a massification of quality literature too.

The job of looking for a job...

Sunday was May Day, International Workers Day. Date originally chosen by the Socialist Labor Congress of the Second International at Paris in 1889, as homage and re-vindication of the Martyrs of Chicago... although the very same US doesn't adhere to that celebration and have their Labor Day on the first Monday of September.

There's been more than a year since I'm without a fixed and stable job, the kind of job that appear in national statistics. That is, it's been a year that I'm surviving with temporal tasks, but as they can get me busy more than 1 hour a week, according to the 2010 Census I don't belong to the unemployed percentage...
I get tired to lose my time in job interviews, made by recruiters that doesn't know the value of a word and only learnt to repeat without replication the norm: "We call you back to let you know if you get the position because we know how important it is." A lie biggest than a lunar crater.

The job of looking for a job is much more exhausting that having a job. I get tired to beg for underpaid opportunities, with eternal schedule availability and far away of what interests me or I like.
I get tired to studding from memory always the same prose that is the only one that recruiters are trained to hear and it opens magically the employment door. I get tired to automatize my spontaneity to reply what they need and not what I want.
The job of looking for a job is worse that passing by the interrogatory of your boyfriend's mother. The scrutiny of the Resume details is more fake than a count of votes in an official election. And then is pitiful that in many cases there's no other choice left than leave out or exaggerate things to be able to get a minimum chance to access the interview... with the recruiter that will ask inconsistencies without logic only to "break the ice" before the psychological test (because you have to say it in English that seems more literate than saying examen) or be compelled to draw a person under the rain using an umbrella.

I have heard such absurd replies like: you're over prepared to this position. What? Would be that they are looking for more ignorant or manageable people? Other typical answer is: You did well the questionnaire - that can take 2 hours and a half - but you don't fit the profile. Once I come up with the idea of asking the recruiter that seemed just graduated from high school, what's the profile you're looking for? And the reply gave me a lesson: Never challenge a recruiter intelligence, nor try to express any originality because as Ernesto Sábato said: "To be original is in a certain way reveal the others trashiness"...

The job of looking for a job doesn't know any holidays, days off nor weekends. Doesn't have any fixed schedule, nor permanent office. It demands hours availability for possible interviews from Monday at 9 AM, to Thursdays at 20:30 PM. Nobody cares if one has previous appointments or if you study on that hours. It urges transport availability of some 50km roundabout from San Isidro to Adrogué or from Quilmes to Ramos Mejía. Nobody cares if one doesn't have mobility or has to spend some cost to travel.

From my last stable job more than a year ago, I got other important lesson: never be more honest than your own boss... I have been betrayed, lied and harassed. I get tired to listen to "job offers" in exchange of doing personal favors, resolve private problems or hide the skeletons in the cupboard.
In this job of looking for a job most of the time I feel unwell to be very honest, intelligent or look for my personal progress without the minimal intention to stomping nobody head, it seemed like I'm an extraterrestrial for deciding to behave with decency, loyalty or transparency.
I think it's much to difficult for someone to make any valuable progress without the intention to be a better person within values that include the progress of all others. In other words, for me we all progress together or nobody progress at all. I also think that is always a way of progress to increase my knowledge and skills, for me life is like a learning classroom where all the experiences are like lessons that are useful to get better and, therefore, progress.

I'm not convinced that the most important thing in a job is to get prosperity, for me money is only enjoyable when it comes as a reward to the effort or talent, but not the main and only objective when looking for a job. There are other wages that can't keep in the wallet, as for example; time. There's no amount of money, there's no salary that can buy me a couple of hours.
Currently, as I can't get a stable job, my priority is to continue studding at the university the career of Portuguese Translation. So my job searching reduces considerably if I look for a part-time job. Although I explain and over-explain to the automate recruiters that I don't care if the salary is lesser, it seems that I talk in Sanskrit or some dead language. Is it so hard to understand that can't get back lost time by paying, while we all know that money comes and goes??

I like to write, I hope that whom keep on reading until this point have already perceived, and I would be highly interesting in a stable job where I could take advantage of this ability (or as current fashion says: skill), I have higher education studies in copywriting and now I'm complementing them with knowledge of grammar and spelling in Spanish, besides being bilingual in Portuguese and have senior level of English.

I don't care to collect riches, nor the worthless and temporal prosperity because I don't want only money, nor fill my pockets with things that won't offer me consolation when being betrayed or needed to defend my dignity.
I want to be cherished for my work and that my work be respected, I want to set a difference for the others and not to make an economical difference for me, I want to share the talents that God gave me and not take any advantage of them.
I want my job to ennoble my life and appraise the ones that lives around me.
I'm special and I'm not afraid to be myself, and set any difference with the rest... hopefully soon will appear someone brave that share my common progress, justice and dignity ideas to offer me a decent and permanent job, I'm available to work. Thanks!
Meanwhile, I'll keep on looking.

To learn to find love happiness isn't an easy task and that's why not everybody finds it. Ones spend their life collecting money because they think that can buy anything, others lost their life worried by things that seem important, but only make use of their time or space, and some pass their life blindfolded, with earplugs and muzzled... Without taking heart to see with attention, without courage to listen with emotion and without braveness to shout with passion.

Hidden like that in the shadows they spend their empty life faraway from the learning of finding the love happiness... and die without nothing important, without purity, without naivety and dressed with fear or shame. They bury their bodies along with the only opportunity they had and wasted to learn to find love happiness.


Please, Chocolated Wild Horse, don't make my heart feel pain while you let passing an existence empty of purpose, don't be afraid within the "I can't" while you pour the only opportunity to really live, don't hurt my soul missing the lessons of the learning to find love happiness TOGETHER.

Pluck up courage to the adventure of living... and I risk along with you because I Love You Very Much.

And keep on dreaming until your dreams come true

Happily it seems that my creative inspiration has returned hand in hand with my last night dreams.

As a good dreamer and in searching state, born and reflourishment, I keep having these beautiful positive dreams.

This time I dreamt that I was over a tree and between its green leaves I could see the tree trunk with little square woods across perpendicularly like steps to climb up.
In the grass, leaned against the tree there was a beautiful baby with his complete layette laughing joyfully.
And when I thought I was on the tree-cop watching all this, I turned out that actually I was leaning out of a window from heaven above.

So, dream with a tree is something positive in the material ground, it's a symbol of protection, if it is leafy like in my dream it's a signal of satisfactions, health and joy around me. Also, it can represent the protection of a friend and the more stronger and robust the more it will protect.
Dream with a tree in a season like summer or spring announce new hopes, growth, wishes, strength, stability, love and friendship. It represents the person that is focused on her/his own development. When it's abundant with green leaves, it announces profits. And if we're climbed up of a tree it's omen that we'll get the goals of our career and we'll reach a high place in society, having honors and fortune.

The height is another positive factor, the higher the height the greater the success reaching the goals or objectives.

The little square woods also are an images of bonanza, wealth and satisfactions. It symbols the input material, the spirituality and the vital energy. Presage prosperity and calmness. Indicates the need to start again, to re-start all over, to rebuild and reorganize my life.

A width and thick tree trunk as the one I dreamt means that I'm a strong, robust and lasting person.
And it's also a phallic symbol... Good grief!
A trunk also represents old memories, ideals, hopes and emotions, the roots we have and that help us grow, and means an inner sensation of well-being and strong personality.

A baby in a dream is like activate creativity, it means that soon will start a new business or that my abilities will get recognition.
Baby's innocence represents nice beginnings full of warmth, and also are a reflection that in my interior I still keep something pure and 100% incorruptible.
Besides it's a sign of home happiness.

The layette also predicts happiness.

If the window is open it represents the new hopes and the brilliant possibilities that will show up to me in the future. If it's square and big like the one of my dream it means a projection on material grounds at long-term and if the things we saw through it are pleasant it means that those hopes and possibilities will turn into reality in the near future.

This bubbling joy don't hold back, this sincere hope don't disappear and this firm march don't stop.
Everything is possible, only have to be courageous and tenacious.

Dream, dream, dream... never stop dreaming!

I dreamed with a labyrinth... One of the objects more full of esoteric, spiritual and mythological symbology.
My labyrinth was like those of the Monarchist England of the Middle Ages, of not much tall bushed as to see the twisted way of the other side, but enough to not get jump and avoid any trap.

According to the several dream's interpretation a labyrinth means confusion, disorientation, mess, conflicts, complications, difficulties... created frequently by loves/lovers. I'm trying the forget a forbidden lover, without forgetting the love we consummate and keeping the patience to wait for him until the love stop being impossible.

According to the dream's interpretation a plants, trees or live labyrinth means the meeting of happiness when it wasn't expected, predict unexpected joys and the surprise of prosperity in difficult times when one is desperate.

At the end of my dream I found the labyrinth exit following the origin of the music "All you need is love," by my adored Beatles.
Come upon the exit = find a solution or reply.
Music is always a good omen, presage of happiness and consideration. Harmonic music is presage of prosperity and pleasure and expressing positive emotions...
Also if it is showed to people with spiritual ambitions it's indication of mercy and elevation. This search of sacrifice for love is painful, but it will have its reward.

It already started letting me improvise this post after 4 months of silent drought...

God's errors... ??

Does God make mistakes?
I think that's one of the questions that humanity has asked since the beginning of times and not matter the philosophic trends that are represented or the religions believed, nobody has answered yet.
Usually this question appear before us when a beloved dies, or when something that does good to us ends... A saying that is used to console ourselves in these moments is that "The Lord works in mysterious ways" and we have to trust in a divine plan.

Equally all the fellowman are mortals. We know that we were born and in some time our life will end, the only thing we don't know is when. This, in a rational way, can help us give us comfort; for the Catholic believers there's Ethernal Life and for the believers of other religions there will be incarnation or different spirituals events. Would those be the mysterious ways of the Lord's work?
When something that does good to us ends it's more difficult to find such rational console. We want the things that we like and more when they make good to us, to last forever. But we can't control all and not all depends of our will exclusively, people that surround us also exert their will for good or worse of our wishes.
But I think that there's something that nobody can control and it's time... or moments.
As I said before we know we're going to die, but we don't know when. We don't have the power to control when we will die (except in the suicide cases), as neither we can choose when we want our beloved to do it. If it could be possible we all would wish out relatives to live forever by our side.
Logically it's very different the situation about the events that do well to us. In some cases the things happen to us because we seek them to happen because we do the more we can for them to happen. But not always they happen in the moment we wait for them... they can happen before or after depending not only of our will, but also of the actions of other people.

And what about the unexpected facts? What's on when something that surprises and make us wonder happen to us and also does well to us although we didn't look for it?
Does God make mistakes when unexpected facts happen? It could happen that these surprises make us change our plans, interrupt some search, complicate the events or delay the arrive of that thing that does well to us. Or even could happen that the surprise fact leads to finish that other thing we looked for and made us so well.
Something like that happened to me in this time. And that's why I wonder if God makes mistakes?
I achieved what seemed unreachable, I arrived to where I thought it was impossible, I fulfilled what I have dreamed since a child. I managed to accomplished those dreams that are growing all along with us and that the more time it happens the more important they are. And at the same time this huge dream allowed me to fulfil other couple of smaller dreams that I think they would have been very difficult otherwise... but something unexpected happened.
Appeared before me a person very, very special in my life that I know because I have achieved my dream. What a paradox! If I hadn't fulfilled my dream I couldn't have known this person, but at the same time having known this person destroyed my dream in thousand of little pieces.
As I said human beings can't control the moments. I guess that had I known this person before fulfilled my dream, maybe I hadn't accomplished it never. Or if I had known him a lot later of keeping my dream for a long time it wouldn't hurt so much in my soul that my dream ended so soon.

Would be that God makes mistakes? Would be that Him can't control either the moments where certain situations happen?
I asked myself and can't find an answer. I find that God gave me the possibility to fulfill what I wanted so much, but for a very little short time. The dream I pursue for more than 20 years, I was only able to experience it for only two years.
I wonder and I can't find an answer. This person appears in my life much too early at the beginning of my realization and I appear in his life much too late because he already has a family... and these feelings we share appear in my life for the first time with such deepness and in his life reflourish after many years in the oblivion.
And it happens that my impulsive heart is shattered for the premature ending of my dream and hurt because the motive of that end is this person so special; and at the same time my feelings for him have grown in an exponential way. A truthful knot that my reason can't understand, but my being can't avoid.
Would be that God make mistakes? What do you think?

Eclesiástico 30, 2
He that instructeth his son shall be praised in him, and shall glory in him in the midst of them of his household.
Aquele que dá ensinamentos a seu filho será louvado por causa dele, e nele mesmo se gloriará entre seus amigos.
El que educa a su hijo se gozará en él y podrá gloriarse en medio de sus conocidos.

Give thy son his way, and he shall make thee afraid: play with him, and he shall make thee sorrowful.
Adula o teu filho e ele te causará medo; brinca com ele e ele te causará desgosto.
Halaga a tu hijo y te hará temblar; juega con él y te hará llorar.

Instruct thy son, and labour about him, lest his lewd behaviour be an offence to thee.
Educa o teu filho, esforça-te (por instruí-lo), para que te não desonre com sua vida vergonhosa.

• My son, do thou nothing without counsel, and thou shalt not repent when thou hast done. And beware of thy own children, and take heed of them of thy household.
• Mesmo quando age sozinho e sem conselheiro, ele será castigado pelos seus próprios desígnios. Meu filho, nada faças sem conselho, e não te arrependerás depois de teres agido. Não te embrenhes num caminho de perdição e não tropeçarás nas pedras. Não te metas num caminho escabroso, para não pores diante de ti uma pedra de tropeço. Previne-te contra teus filhos, sê prudente em presença de teus familiares.
• No hagas nada sin consejo, y después de hecho no tendrás que arrepentirte. No vayas por camino en que hay tropiezos y no tropieces dos veces en la misma piedra. No te aventures en camino desconocido y ten cuidado con lo que pueda suceder.

Every counsellor giveth out counsel, but there is one that is a counsellor for himself.
Todo conselheiro dá sua opinião, mas há conselheiros que só têm em vista o próprio interesse.
No te fíes de consejos; mira antes de que necesitan, no te aconsejen en provecho suyo.

Eclesiástico 37, 20-21

• In all thy works let the true word go before thee, and steady counsel before every action. A wicked word shall change the heart: out of which four manner of things arise, good and evil, life and death: and the tongue is continually the ruler of them. There is a man that is subtle and a teacher of many, and yet is unprofitable to his own soul.
• Que uma palavra de verdade preceda todos os teus atos, e um conselho firme preceda toda a tua diligência. Uma palavra má transtorna o coração; dela vêm quatro coisas: o bem e o mal, a vida e a morte; sobre estas quem domina de contínuo é a língua. Há homem hábil que ensina a muita gente, mas que é inútil para si mesmo.
• El fundamento de toda obra es la resolución; a toda empresa preceda el consejo. La raíz de los consejos es el corazón de él proceden cuatro ramas: el bien y el mal, la vida y la muerte; y entre ellas decide siempre la lengua.

Open rebuke is better than hidden love.

• O homem sincero anuncia a justiça; a testemunha falsa profere mentira. O falador fere com golpes de espada; a língua dos sábios, porém, cura. Os lábios sinceros permanecem sempre constantes; a língua mentirosa dura como um abrir e fechar de olhos.

A mild answer breaketh wrath: but a harsh word stirreth up fury.

• Be steadfast in the way of the Lord, and in the truth of thy judgment, and in knowledge, and let the word of peace and justice keep with thee. Be meek to hear the word, that thou mayst understand: and return a true answer with wisdom.
• Firma-te no caminho do Senhor, na sinceridade de teus sentimentos e teus conhecimentos, nunca te afastes de uma linguagem pacífica e eqüitativa. Escuta com doçura o que te dizem a fim de compreenderes, darás então uma resposta sábia e apropriada.
• Se firme en tus juicios y no tengas más que una palabra. Se pronto para oír y lento para responder.

Eclesiástico 5, 15

Honour and glory is in the word of the wise, but the tongue of the fool is his ruin.
A honra e a consideração acompanham a linguagem do sábio, mas a língua do imprudente é a sua própria ruína.
En el hablar está la gloria o la deshonra, y la lengua del hombre es su ruina.

Eclesiástico 6, 5

A sweet word multiplieth friends, and appeaseth enemies, and a gracious tongue in a good man aboundeth.
Uma boa palavra multiplica os amigos e apazigua os inimigos; a linguagem elegante do homem virtuoso é uma opulência.

• There is a lying rebuke in the anger of an injurious man: and there is a judgment that is not allowed to be good: and there is one that holdeth his peace, he is wise.
• Há uma falsa correção na cólera de um insolente; há um modo de julgar que muitas vezes não é justo; e aquele que se cala dá prova de prudência.
• Hay quien reprende importunamente y hay quien calla, mostrando su prudencia.

Eclesiástico 20, 6-8

• There is one that holdeth his peace, because he knoweth not what to say: and there is another that holdeth his peace, knowing the proper time. A wise man will hold his peace till he see opportunity: but a babbler, and a fool, will regard no time. He that useth many words shall hurt his own soul: and he that taketh authority to himself unjustly shall be hated.
• Há quem se cale por não saber falar, e há quem se cale porque reconhece quando é tempo (de falar). O sábio permanece calado até o momento (oportuno), mas o leviano e imprudente não espera a ocasião. Aquele que se expande em palavras, prejudica-se a si mesmo; quem se permite todo o desregramento torna-se odioso.
• Hay quien calla porque no tiene que responder y hay quien calla esperando su vez. El sabio se calla hasta el momento oportuno; el necio no sabe guardar su tiempo. El que mucho habla molesta, y el que en hablar no guarda medida se hace odioso.

Eclesiástico 33, 4

He that cleareth up a question, shall prepare what to say, and so having prayed he shall be heard, and shall keep discipline, and then he shall answer.
Aquele que esclarece uma pergunta, prepara a resposta; depois de assim ter orado, ele será atendido. Ele concentra as suas idéias e depois responde.
Reflexiona antes de responder y serás escuchado; recoge tus pensamientos y responde.

Proverbios 15, 28
The mind of the just studieth obedience: the mouth of the wicked overfloweth with evils.
O coração do justo estuda a sua resposta; a boca dos maus, porém, vomita o mal.

He that answereth before he heareth, showeth himself to be a fool, and worthy of confusion.

The flute and the psaltery make a sweet melody, but a pleasant tongue is above them both.
A flauta e a harpa emitem um som harmonioso; a língua suave, porém, supera uma e outra.

Éxodo 23, 1-2

• Thou shalt not receive the voice of a lie: neither shalt thou join thy hand to bear false witness for a wicked person. Thou shalt not follow the multitude to do evil: neither shalt thou yield in judgment, to the opinion of the most part, to stray from the truth.
• Não levantarás um boato falso; não darás tua mão ao perverso para levantar um falso testemunho. Não seguirás o mau exemplo da multidão. Não deporás num processo, metendo-te do lado da maioria de maneira a perverter a justiça.
• No esparzas rumores falsos. No te unas con los impíos para testificar en falso. No te dejes arrastrar al mal por la muchedumbre.

Proverbios 10, 21
The lips of the just teach many: but they that are ignorant, shall die in the want of understanding.
Os lábios dos justos nutrem a muitos; mas os néscios perecem por falta de inteligência.
Los labios del justo nutren a muchos, el necio muere por falta de entendimiento.

Proverbios 16, 23-24

The heart of the wise shall instruct his mouth: and shall add grace to his lips. Well ordered words are as a honeycomb: sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
O coração do sábio torna sua boca instruída, e acrescenta-lhes aos lábios o saber. As palavras agradáveis são como um favo de mel; doçura para a alma e saúde para os ossos.
El corazón del sabio hace disertar su boca y con sus labios avalora la doctrina. Panal de miel son sus suaves sentencias, dulzura del alma y medicina de los huesos.

Eclesiástico 4, 28-29

• And refrain not to speak in the time of salvation. Hide not thy wisdom in her beauty. For by the tongue wisdom is discerned: and understanding, and knowledge, and learning by the word of the wise, and steadfastness in the works of justice.
• Não retenhas uma palavra que pode ser salutar, não escondas tua sabedoria pela tua vaidade. Pois a sabedoria faz-se distinguir pela língua; o bom senso, o saber e a doutrina, pela palavra do sábio; e a firmeza, pelos atos de justiça.
• No retengas la palabra salvadora y no ocultes tu sabiduría; pues en el hablar se da a conocer la sabiduría, y la doctrina en las palabras de la lengua.

Eclesiástico 8, 4
Strive not with a man that is full of tongue, and heap not wood upon his fire.
Não tenhas desavença com um grande falador, e não amontoes lenha em sua fogueira.
No disputes con hombre lenguaraz, que sería amontonar leña sobre fuego.

Eclesiástico 28, 22
Many have fallen by the edge of the sword, but not so many as have perished by their own tongue.
Muitos homens morreram pelo fio da espada, mas não tantos quanto os que pereceram por sua própria língua.
Muchos caen al filo de la espada, pero muchos más cayeron por la lengua.

• In the company of great men take not upon thee: and when the ancients are present, speak not much. Before a storm goeth lightning: and before shamefacedness goeth favour: and for thy reverence good grace shall come to thee.
• No meio dos poderosos, não tomes muitas liberdades; não fales muito onde houver anciãos: vê-se o relâmpago antes de se ouvir o estalido, a graça precede o rubor da modéstia. Pelo teu recato serás benquisto.
• En medio de los grandes no te pavonees, entre los ancianos no parlotees. Como el trueno precede el relámpago, así la modestia precede la gracia.

Behold the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom: and to depart from evil, is understanding.
O temor do Senhor, eis a sabedoria; fugir do mal, eis a inteligência.
El temor de Dios, esa es la sabiduría; apartarse del mal, esa es la inteligencia.



Proverbios 2, 10-11

If wisdom shall enter into thy heart, and knowledge please thy soul: Counsel shall keep thee, and prudence shall preserve thee.
Quando a sabedoria penetrar em teu coração e o saber deleitar a tua alma, a reflexão velará sobre ti, amparar-te-á a razão.
Cuando entre en tu corazón la sabiduría y sea dulce a tu alma la ciencia, te guardará el consejo y te preservará la inteligencia.

Proverbios 3, 13-15

• Blessed is the man that findeth wisdom, and is rich in prudence: The purchasing thereof is better than the merchandise of silver, and her fruit than the chief and purest gold: She is more precious than all riches: and all the things that are desired, are not to be compared to her.
• Feliz do homem que encontrou a sabedoria, daquele que adquiriu a inteligência, porque mais vale este lucro que o da prata, e o fruto que se obtém é melhor que o fino ouro. Ela é mais preciosa que as pérolas, jóia alguma a pode igualar.
• Bienaventurado el que alcanza la sabiduría y adquiere inteligencia; Porque es su adquisición mejor que la de la plata y es de más provecho que el oro. Es más preciosa que las perlas y no hay tesoro que la iguale.

Proverbios 4, 7-9

• The beginning of wisdom, get wisdom, and with all thy possession purchase prudence. Take hold on her, and she shall exalt thee: thou shalt be glorified by her, when thou shalt embrace her. She shall give to thy head increase of graces, and protect thee with a noble crown.
• Eis o princípio da sabedoria: adquire a sabedoria. Adquire a inteligência em troca de tudo o que possuis. Tem-na em grande estima, ela te exaltará, glorificar-te-á quando a abraçares, colocará sobre tua fronte uma graciosa coroa, outorgar-te-á um magnífico diadema.
• He aquí el principio de la sabiduría: adquirir la sabiduría, a toda costa adquirir la prudencia. Ténla en gran estima, y ella te ensalzará y te honrará si la abrazas. Pondrá en tu cabeza corona de gracias, te ceñirá espléndida diadema.

Proverbios 3, 35
The wise shall possess glory: the promotion of fools is disgrace.
A glória será o prêmio do sábio, a ignomínia será a herança dos insensatos.
Da honra a los sabios y reserva la infamia para los necios.


Proverbios 9, 9

Give an occasion to a wise man, and wisdom shall be added to him. Teach a just man, and he shall make haste to receive it.
Dá ao sábio: tornar-se-á ele mais sábio ainda, ensina ao justo e seu saber aumentará.
Da consejos al sabio, y se hará más sabio todavía; enseña al justo, y acrecerá su saber.

Proverbios 11, 2
Where pride is, there also shall be reproach: but where humility is, there also is wisdom.
Vindo o orgulho, virá também a ignomínia, mas a sabedoria mora com os humildes.
Detrás de la soberbia viene la deshonra, con la modestia va la sabiduría.


Proverbios 12, 1
He that loveth correction, loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof, is foolish.
Aquele que ama a correção ama a ciência, mas o que detesta a reprimenda é um insensato.

Proverbios 14, 6
A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: the learning of the wise is easy.
O mofador busca a sabedoria, mas em vão; ao homem entendido a ciência é fácil.

A wise man feareth, and declineth from evil: the fool leapeth over, and is confident.
O sábio teme o mal e dele se aparta, mas o insensato que se eleva dá-se por seguro.

The tongue of the wise adorneth knowledge: but the mouth of fools bubbleth out folly.

For the fruit of good labours is glorious and the root of wisdom never faileth.

Sabiduría 8, 7

• And if a man love justice: her labours have great virtues: for she teacheth temperance, and prudence, and justice, and fortitude, which are such things as men can have nothing more profitable in life.
• E se alguém ama a justiça, seus trabalhos são virtudes; ela ensina a temperança e a prudência, a justiça e a força: não há ninguém que seja mais útil aos homens na vida.

Não desprezes o que contarem os velhos sábios, mas entretém-te com suas palavras.

Eclesiástico 20, 32
O Wisdom that is hid, and treasure that is not seen: what profit is there in them both?
Sabedoria escondida e tesouro invisível. Para que serve uma e outro?

Knowledge is a fountain of life to him that possesseth it: the instruction of fools is foolishness.

Covet ye, therefore, my words, and love them, and you shall have instruction.
Resplandescente é a Sabedoria, e sua beleza é inalterável: os que a amam, descobrem-na facilmente.

Eclesiástico 6, 23
For the wisdom of doctrine is according to her name, and she is not manifest unto many.
Pois a sabedoria que instrui justifica o seu nome, não se manifesta a muitos.
Porque la sabiduría es fiel a su nombre y es discreta en revelarse.

• They that were of good understanding in words, have also done wisely themselves: and have understood truth and justice, and have poured forth proverbs and judgments.
• Os homens de linguagem sensata procedem também com sabedoria, compreendem a verdade e a justiça, e espalham uma multidão de sentenças e máximas.

The knowledge of a wise man shall abound like a flood, and his counsel continueth like a fountain of life.
A ciência do sábio espalha-se como a água que transborda, e o conselho que ele dá permanece como fonte de vida.
